With the American M4 Sherman tanks built in large numbers to the Allies, the British decided to match their successful 17-pounder anti-tank gun with the latest version of the Sherman in the hopes that they could produce a tank capable of challenging the German Tiger and Panther heavy tanks feared. Requiring quite a substantial redesign of the revolver and with the pistol mounted on the side, the 17-pounder Shermans were arguably the most effective Allied tanks of World War II and were easily capable of knocking out all the German tanks following them after landing in the Normandy encountered.
