Just two years after the launch, VW offered the first GTI. The compact car had what had previously distinguished sports vehicles: a very low weight, but a powerful engine (110 hp). In addition, the car was suitable for everyday use and quite affordable.
And the performance of the little power wonder was quite comparable to that of the small sports cars of the time. Visually, the most powerful Golf at the time was eye-catching due to the wider fenders, wider tires, the sports steering wheel and the red-framed radiator grille.
The best seller at the time still has cult status today. Top speed: 182 km / h.
